The shopping centre is part of the Safe Spaces scheme for people who need support and also offer free wheelchair loans. All of St Stephen’s electricity in common areas comes from photovoltaic panels and energy use has been reduced by 40% since 2010, saving occupiers £383,100 and cutting carbon by 2,500 tonnes. One million litres of rainwater are harvested each year and 15 tonnes of food waste recycled through the food-to-water treatment plant on site. Over 200 unemployed young people have benefited from retail training at St Stephen’s since 2007, through an award-winning ‘Get Into Retailing’ programme. The centre works closely with local charities and the community including Hull Children’s University, Hull FC Community Foundation and Stepney Primary School. 690 children have taken part in fun, educational literacy events at St Stephen’s since 2013, through the partnership with the National Literacy Trust.
